SISTERS OF SPIRIT - A College-aged cosplay story
by Dale, Brandie and Angela
Chapter One: Friends in the Making
A new breeze was blowing, the winds of change were blowing into six young woman's lives forever changing them. They would make new insights on themselves and others.
New friends, new lovers and companions- these will become part of their circle.
These are their stories.
Dale had finally made it out on her own. She had already moved to Stockton CA, and moved into an apartment complex with what she had for the moment. She knew she needed temporary lodging until she found a house.
When it came to looks, Dale didn't slouch for beans. 5' 9" and 135lbs., she was a goddess to any man who looked at her... but her interests didn't involve men. She was into Anime when she first saw SAILOR MOON on Cartoon Network- and she found suppliers for the original set in subtitles. Looking at the videos, she saw how the characters were all so lovely in their outfits that she wished she could be like one of them.
But now she was walking the local college campus, looking for help with registration. Finally, she went and slumped on a bench, weary from all of the walking she did. She hoped that someone would notice her and offer help.
Sandra was walking to her next class when she saw a dejected girl slumped down on a bench. 'Must be new,' she thought. She quickly walked over to her. "Are you alright, miss?" she asked.
"Just weary, that's all," Dale replied when she looked into the loveliest face she could set her eyes on, "Can you tell me where I can go to register for classes here?"
"I sure can!" Sandra said cheerfully. "I'm headed over that way now." To everyone who knew her, she was just like the typical shoujo anime girl found in her addiction, anime. Cheerful, upbeat, and always looking forward to the future. With her long brown hair in a ponytail, she looked like one of her favorite characters, Sailor Jupiter.
So Dale picked herself up off of the bench and walked with the young, vibrant woman. Noticing the look, she noticed the similarity between her and Sailor Jupiter where Dale had long blonde hair that stretched all the way to behind her knees. "So what classes are you taking?" she asked her.
"Oh, mostly basic stuff, like Calculus, Phys. Ed, and English 101. But my favorite course would have to be Japanese." answered Sandra smiling brightly.
"You serious? I've never been to a college outside of my hometown of Seattle Washington that teaches Japanese on a regular basis," Dale said in surprise. "Oh, there are all kinds of Japanese classes you can take. Are you interested in the Japanese language and culture?" "Are you kidding?" Dale asked, "Ever since I visited Seattle's JapanTown have I been interested."
But suddenly, Dale laughed gently as she realized something. "Here we've been talking like best friends," she said, "And I don't even know your name."
"You're right!" Sandra said, stopping in her tracks. Laughing at both of them, she turned facing the new girl and held out her hand. "I'm Sandra Brown," she said.
Taking hold of it, Dale replied, "It's nice to meet you, Sandra. I'm Dale Speer." "Nice to meet ya, Dale!" Sandra said, grinning. They laughed as the two girls went to admissions.
And from that moment- and even when they first talked- the friendship forged there would take them to great heights.
As they continued to walk, Sandra thought of something. "So Dale," she said, "Are you going to join any of the clubs we've got here? We have lots of great ones."
"Well it depends on 2 things," Dale said, "The time I have, as well as something else." Dale then told Sandra of her facination with Japanese Anime, and how many a night was spent in front of her big-screen television with a DVD in the player, watching it.
"Is that so?" Sandra asked. "I happen to enjoy anime myself. I guess obsessed is a better word. As a matter of fact, I am Secretary of the "Japanimation" club we've got here." "You're kidding?" Dale asked, surprise colored her voice as she watched her new friend as they made their way though the crowd.
She grinned as she said, "Nope!"
"Well, that solves one of my predicaments," Dale said, "Does your group have any particular Animes they like to watch?" "We try to watch as many types as we can get a hold of." she said. "And since I am also an internet geek, I've been downloading episodes and series that haven't been released in the US yet. As to myself, I prefer to watch shoujo anime. Especially my personal favorite, SAILOR MOON."
"You're kidding," Dale remarked, "That's way cool! I got hooked on Anime when I first saw that series on Cartoon Network- and now, I've the entire Original First Series on DVD, thanks to ADV Films." Dale even told her that it wasn't the DiC dub they did... she said that she spent the last year getting the DVDs of the Original Japanese Series, subbed for her convenience.
Sandra got quiet for a second- then said, "I've got all 5 seasons, plus the movies and SuperS special on DVD."
Brandie picks up her back pack and flings it over her one shoulder. "Are you sure your all right?" she asks before seeing the bruise- then she says, "Hold still." She gently touched the cheek making the bruise go away. "There all better," she said.
"Yes, I'm okay," Dale replied, "Thank you, though." her hand went to her newly healed cheek as she thought, 'She couldn't have just healed me.'
"I should be going." Brandie said as she smiled wanly. "You shouldn't be seen with me- I'm not too popular around here." The slight girl smiled at Dale.
"Wait!" Dale said, "I don't even know your name."
"I'm Brandie," The other girl called over her shoulder. "Take care now. Merry part!" 'For a girl who dresses and acts like she's Hotaru,' Dale thought as she headed to her car, 'She's a good person.'
As the day ended, Dale was walking with Sandra towards the parking lot. They were talking about the first day for the newcomer. "You actually ran into one of the students who dress Gothic?" Sandra asked.
"Yeah," Dale replied, "and oddly enough, she was dressed like she was Hotaru. When we ran into each other, I had one heck of a nasty bruise on my cheek- but she touched it and the bruise went away, almost like she was one of the 'Charmed Ones'." "Or like she was a real version of Hotaru," Sandra replied, "Did she give you her name?"
"Yeah," Dale replied, "Brandie."
The girl in question sat on one of the many benches at the college. Looking though her back pack she sighed. Everything was in its proper spot. She was keeping an eye on the people around her.
She had found that if she didn't keep aware, some people would take advantage. Just cause she dressed Gothic did not mean she had no feelings. But that is what people seemed to think when they would file past and say unkind things acting as if she could not hear.
Dale was looking back as she asked Sandra if she had a ride home. "I usually take the bus," Sandra replied to her then smiled shaking her red head. "But maybe this afternoon, we could hang out for a while at your place." Dale finally noticed Brandie. "Come on," Dale said, "Maybe we can cheer her up." Together, they walked back to the young woman and Dale said, "Hi, Brandie."
Looking up, surprise was coloring her features as she saw Dale and another person there. "Merry meet," she said, noticing the ugly looks being cast at her when the other two approched her.
"Hard crowd," she remarked, "There are days I wonder when I sit here." Pausing she looked at them and continued, "What brings you two over to my shadowed corner of the world?"
"Oh, we thought we could give you something to smile about," Sandra replied, "I was going to go over to Dale's apartment and spend the afternoon watching Anime with her. Would you like to do that?"
Checking her backpack again. "Ok why not. I have in my pack ~Utena the rose collection~ one and two... as well as the movie." She stood up as she shouldered her purple bag again. "Are you two sure about this?" she asked, "I don't want people being mean to either of you just cause you befriended me."
This caused a bit of shock between Sandra and Dale. They could both tell that Brandie meant it too. And from the reactions of most of the campus around them they could understand why she asked.
"You know what my first impression of you was?" Dale asked, her eyes taking the goth girl in front of her with kindness. Blinking at Dale, Brandie was surprised when she asked, "What was it?" tilting her head she looked at the two standing in front of her.
"I thought that you wasn't so Gothic," Dale replied, "That you looked like a character from Sailor Moon named Hotaru Tomoe. When you touched my cheek- and healed the bruise- it cemented the impression there."
Raising an eyebrow Brandie replied, "I have always been able to do that. That's half the reason why most people avoid me." She gave a deep sigh as she concluded, "People don't like what they cannot understand." Dale said with a nod, "Most people don't understand many things, so we're willing to hide them. But don't think that your healing my cheek gave me a reason to be scared of you."
"And we're so sure," Sandra replied, "That we felt you needed some better company." "Please, will you be my guest and spend the afternoon with us?" Dale asked.
"Why not," she replied.
Suddenly, she glared over Dale's shoulder to a man behind her. "Go away, Jason," she said, "Neither of these two girls would like your high-handed ways."
"Oh, I wouldn't think so," Jason DeMarco said while laying his big hand on Dale's shoulder, but much to his surprise- and before Brandie could reply- she grasped it and threw him over onto the library's lawn.
"Now do you understand what Brandie meant?" Dale asked. He was so painfully aware, he could only nod his head. "Come on," Dale said, "Let's go to my car and get out of here."
Jason glared at the retreating backs of the trio. His face dark with deep rage- from him there would be trouble.
Brandie snorted. "He thinks he's God's gift to women," she said, shaking her head as they went back to the car. "Well," Sandra noted, "Dale sure proved otherwise."
"Yes she did." Brandie slightly smiled knowing that they left the fuming male behind them. "I do wish they would all stop with the ugly looks. Its not like each of us are not different."
"Well, maybe we can change that," Dale said, "And as to how I threw 'God's gift' over my shoulder. My father was a teacher in Karate, and he taught me. I hold NiDan in Shotokan Karate."
"Now you've got to be joking, Dale," Sandra said, "A 2nd. Degree Black Belt is hard to get."
Brandie smiled as she asked, "How long have you been training?" "10 years," Dale replied, "My father was GoDan when he passed away, and he was ShoDan when he started training me."
"I have been praticing Tae-Kwon-Do and Judo for all of my life." Brandie said softly. "My father taught me the arts." Looking at her two companions. "I know I don't look the sort. But I am trained- I'm not sure of my ranking for my Papa would not tell me..." Smiling softly, she continued... "Sometimes I think he did not tell me for I am not that good. Well, it feels like I am not good."
"Usually, you hold 3 rank tests a year," Dale said, "So by the end of your second year, you can get your IchiKyu. It was then that I took a few years and became part of the U.S. Karate Team... but just 2 years ago, I got my Black Belt."
"I have been training since I was five." Brandie went on as she took her spot in the back seat of Dale's car. "I know Papa's been testing me but he will not tell me my rank." She sighed.
"Well, maybe you can beat him," Dale replied, "Would you 2 like to learn Karate?" "Oh, I'd love to," Sandra said, "What about you, Brandie?" "Why not, Father always told me to learn other arts too." Brandie said, smiling softly and gently sighing as she said, "I have come very close to beating him. But he always manages to overcome me."
"I've got some old workout clothes at my apartment," Dale replied, "Why don't I let you 2 use them and I get you started? And as to your father overcoming you, Brandie... when you face even him in the Sparring Ring, you can't treat him like he's your father- but like your opponent. You have a sense of honor when it comes to him, because he's both your father and your Sensei- but when you're fighting with him, you can't let that get in the way."
Nodding, Brandie smiled and tucked a lock of black hair behing her ear. 'Dale's right,' she thought, 'perhaps I've been letting my personal emotions cloud my judgement with him.'
So they took off in her convertible with Dale's long locks flowing in the wind. "I never knew you had a convertible," Sandra said, "This is great!" "Oh, you've better believe it," Dale replied. Turning on her cd player the sounds of Sailormoon R come flowing out of her speakers.
Brandie again softly smiled as her hair whipped around her. "Its a nice car Dale-chan."
"Thank you, Brandie," Dale replied, "I always had a touch for convertibles."
"Brandie," Sandra asked, "Why did you say 'Dale-chan'?" "Well, Sandra-chan." Brandie smiled lightly. "It is the correct address for a friend. Plus it was the way I was raised." Tilting her head to look at Sandra, she continued- "I suppose it is odd, Sandra-chan to adress people so. But it is the way I was taught."
"Well, I always knew they did it in the Japanese Animes," Sandra said, "It's just that I've never been addressed like that before." "Same here," Dale replied.
"Half Japanese," Brandie said softly, "Not that I look it." She winked at the two in the front seat.
"Wow!" Sandra said, "So your father's fully blooded Nihongo?" Brandie nodded at the question.
"Did you live in Japan or ever visit it?" Sandra asked. "I've ALWAYS wanted to go there."
"There were a few times when me and my parents would visit relatives there," Brandie said, "They always took us out and had the Tea Ceremony performed for us, and we spent one of our tours at a Shinto Temple. Man, it's so beautiful in the midst of the bustle of the city that I spent many an afternoon in the gardens at one of the temples."
"I wish I could get an expedited Passport for going there," Dale replied, "Ever since I got hold of some of the different SERA MYU performances from someone I know, on VCD, I've always wanted to see one in person." "Hold on there," Brandie replied, "You've got Sera Myu?!"
"Yep," Dale replied. "That is so cool!" Sandra said excitedly. "We're going to have to have a Sera Myu night in the club. I'll talk to the prez about it."
"What Club?" Brandie asked.
"I'm the Secretary of the college's Japanamation club." she replied. "I thought we had clubs for Dramatics and Band, not to mention the unofficial 'Goths Group'," Brandie replied, "But I never knew we had a club all about Anime. I'm going to have to show up one of these days and sit in."
"You're both welcome to come and visit," Sandra replied, "We'd love to have ya. In fact, how about you guys come to our party we're having tomorrow night? It's a costume party."
"I could go for that," Brandie said, "What about you, Dale-chan?" "Same here," the driver replied.
Well, Dale had pulled into her apartment complex and parked near her building. "We're here," she declared.
The complex had 5 different 3-story buildings, each having 9 apartments in them. And Dale already made friends with many of the residents, so she was very happy to arrive with 2 new ones.
Sandra looks around. "Nice complex here." she commented. "I'll say," Brandie remarked.
Dale led them back to where the staircase was to her apartment and up to the 2nd. floor on the left hand side. Opening it up, she found her cat sitting patiently on the sofa.
"Hi there, Sky," Dale said when it landed into her arms.
Sky was a cream-colored shorthair all the way down to her feet. If she had the crescent moon on her forehead, she could almost be mistaken for Artemis of Sailor Moon.
Sandra walked over and let Sky sniff her hand. "Hi Sky," she said, "Wanna be my friend?" Sniffing the young woman's hand, the cat snuggled her head against it, purring gently. "Looks like you've made a friend, Sandra," Dale said.
But Brandie was looking at what graced the far wall opposite the door. "Man, Dale," she remarked, "You tricked everything out for this!"
What she was looking at- and remarking about- was the largest Home Entertainment center she ever laid eyes on with the centerpiece being a BigScreen Digital Television outfitted with everything Dale could get- including, in the bottom, a Dell Dimension computer outfitted for Television Redirect and connected to a Cable Modem for BroadBand WebAccess.
Sandra looked over to where Brandie was and gasped. "SWEET!" she said "Nice set-up! Your parents get this for ya?" "In a way, they did," Dale replied. She then told them about their deaths at the hands of a drunk driver 3 months ago- and Brandie hung her head. "My condolences on the loss, Dale-chan." she said. She almost seemed to draw into herself with Dale's news. Sandra also silenced as she said, "I'm sorry."
"Don't be," Dale replied, "I got over the loss when I came out here. Tonight, though, is a night for celebration." "She's right," Brandie remarked, "And besides, I've got 2 new friends who appreciate me for who I am inside- not how I dress." She smiled at both Sandra and Dale.
"That's right!" Sandra said with a smile. "Wanna order a pizza or something?" "There's a PAPA MURPHY'S just a few blocks from here," Dale said, "And I've had some of the best pizzas from them where I lived before!"
"I've heard of them," Brandie said, "They don't bake the pizzas in ovens at their place the way DOMINO'S PIZZA does- you order it, then bring it home and bake it here in your oven. Man, those pizzas are SO GOOD!"
"I LOVE their pizzas!" Sandra said. "What kind of toppings we want?" "How about we get a Chicken & Bacon Gourmet Stuffed Pizza and a Chicago-Style Stuffed Pizza for later?" Dale asked. "Sounds good to me!" Sandra replied.
At the sound of the 2nd. one, Brandie's stomach rumbled. "Ooh man," she said, "Did you have to speak the name of the one I so happen to LOVE?" Brandie bounced a little in her happiness.
"I couldn't help it," Dale said. So the hostess set her oven to preheat, then the 3 piled back into her car and drove the distance to where Dale was saying and stars were in their eyes when they pulled up.
Ordering what they did- as well as a Cheese Pizza for an appetizer- the 3 roared back and Dale set the cheese pizza in the oven, setting the timer for 25min.
Looking at the clock, Dale said, "I almost forgot to check my e-mail boxes." So she keyed up the television and the computer, grabbed the wireless mouse and keyboard to get to work. "You're an Internet geek as well?" Sandra asked.
"Not so much," Dale replied, "I have a few websites out there- but they're more pet projects. No, most of what I do is in IM or in Chatrooms on a few sites." "Where do you do your chatting?" Brandie asked. Looking out Dale's balcony she gazed over the city then turned to watched the others once more.
"Yahoo, BigBob.com and Ethereal Realms are my favorite servers for chat," Dale said. "Same here!" Sandra replied. "Even though Yahoo sucks, I love the groups area. I am in alot of anime-based rpgs there." "What are BigBob.com and Ethereal Realms?" Brandie asked. "Well," Dale said, "They're 2 server systems that let me use one of the oldest known chatmethods on the web- WebChat, or BBS-Style Chat."
"Ah." Brandie said. "I don't chat much on the net.." Her voice trailed off. "Never really got into it."
As she sat on the loveseat, Sky climbed off of Sandra and jumped into Brandie's lap. Petting the cat the woman said, "Well Sky-cat you are going to turn my black clothing white." Sky meowed at the girl who's lap she now sat in.
Brandie sighed and rolled her eyes. "You're doing that on purpose." The cat meowed again making Sandra laugh. "Sky's a kind cat," Dale replied, "She takes after her owner, so to speak."
Hearing the alarm go off, Dale went over to the kitchen and got the one pizza out and put the Chicken/Bacon one in, setting the timer for longer- 45min. Getting out her pizza roller, she cut it into 12 slices, set 2 each on paper plates, and served everyone.
"So, Dale," Sandra asked, "What are your pet projects on the web?" "Well," Dale said, "I've got one personal website that tells about me, and I have another that I keep my FanFiction in."
"Arigato, Dale-chan, for the pizza," Brandie said softly, accepting her slices from Dale. "I keep a few sites too. Mostly for my art and stories." She ate her pizza with careful quickness.
"Oh, don't worry about Sky," Dale says, "She will not eat cheese pizza- but put Chicken or tuna in front of her, and she's a contented eater." Reminding herself, she called her cat over and got out a can of drained tuna and put it on her dish, setting it in front of the feline who started eating contentedly.
Brandie nodded and was about to say something more when there was a knock at the door.
When Dale answered it, she found one of her neighbors there with a dish in her hands. "Hello there," the redhead said, "I thought you was tired of pizza, and so I brought this over."
"You must be Kerri," Dale said, "Please come in. I've heard your name around the complex."
Brandie looked up at the redhead. "Konban wa, Kerri-chan," she said, "How are you?" "Brandie-chan," Kerri said, "Pleasant surprise seeing you here," The redhead said as she handed Dale the dish. The blonde woman smiled at her newest redheaded friend.
"Seems I am making new friends, Brandie said smiling at the redhead. "Forgive me for not introducing myself before," Dale said, "My name's Dale, and our other friend is Sandra." "Nice to meet you, Dale," Kerri said.
Sandra looked at the pair and asked, "How long have you two known each other?"
Kerri smiled. "Not too long. Found this one in the middle of a fight," she replied, gifting Brandie with a long look, "Not that she needed help cleaning out the bakas that had attacked her." Brandie blushed lightly. Her cheeks rosey. "Well, they started it," she said, "Papa always told me to finsh what I start."
When she set the pan on the rangetop, she saw that 20min. had elapsed. Dale had already cleared out her inbox of the junkmail and finished reading the important stuff.
"Well, I've got a couple of WebMail Addresses to check," Dale remarked, and settled back in front of her keyboard... which struck Kerri as odd- until she checked the television.
"You've got to be kidding!" Kerri remarked, "That is one extreme H.E.C. you've got there, Dale."
"Even I was shocked when I saw it," Sandra replied, "Dale went and tricked out everything to the extreme- 2 DualDeck VCRs, 2 5-disc DVD players- and the computer with Cable Internet Access."
"I have a laptop with a satellite uplink," Brandie said softly, "Only so I could use the internet while traveling and to plan trips and such."
Dale was in the kitchen area again, getting the second pizza out of the oven and cutting it. "Well, there's only a few cases where I dig out one of my best tools," she said, "a 3-port Wireless Router for other computers." She said that she would have to shut down the system to connect up the wireless router- but when all was said and done, she could do it in 5 min.
"I like my uplink," Brandie said smiling lightly. Seeing the suprise on the other two girls' faces. "It was a gift from my Mother." Her eyes darkened a bit with those words but the dark anger filled eyes soon gave way to their normal look. Dale whistled as she remarked, "You're lucky, Brandie, you know that?"
"Yes it is," Brandie replied, a wry smile appearing on her lips. Blinking, she looked at Dale. "It was a kiss up gift," Brandie added as she shook her dark hair. "Mom doesn't like the fact I choose to live with Papa."
Kerri plopped down next to Brandie, squeezing the other girl's arm.
Just then, another knock came at the door- and one of Dale's upstairs neighbors came down with another dish, this one containing a pie. "I was hearing the sounds of a celebration here," the woman said, "And I thought I could give you this." She had the loveliest head of Chestnut Brown hair Dale had ever seen.
"Please, will you join us?" Dale asked her, so the woman entered, introducing herself as Andrea.
"Konban wa, Andrea-chan," Brandie called out from her spot next to Kerri, flashing a smile at her friend. "Andrea, how are things?" Kerri asked her.
"Brandie, Kerri," she recognized the 2, "Very well. I figured Dale could use a pie for tonight, so I brought one down." It was then that Brandie laughed- it was a light full sound, causing all in the room to smile with her laughter. Andrea noticed the 5th. person in the room and asked who she was. "My name's Sandra," she introduced herself.
"It's nice to meet a newcomer, Sandra," Andrea replied.
Dale dished up more pizza for everyone and settled back in her chair, lifting the table back up.
"Uh, Brandie," Andrea asked, "What's Dale doing?" "Playing with her computer." Brandie said while pointing over to Dale's system. "State of the art, don't you think?" "I'll say," she replied, "She must have invested a lot of money to trick out this H.E.C."
"You can say that again," Sandra said.
"So, my friends," Dale said, "What do we want to do tonight?" "Watch anime!" Four voices chorused together, and Brandie fell off the love seat laughing.
"It's settled," Dale said, "Now the question is what to watch. I've got all of the SM Subbed Episodes & Movies on DVD & VHS, Brandie's got Utena- and I've got one other series." She tossed a DVD case to Sandra who squealed when she saw the title- and passed it to Brandie.
"Saint Tail," Brandie read the title of the amine, "Well now, another magical girl." She was laughing again from her spot on the floor.
"Does anyone happen to like it the way I do?" Dale asked. Brandie looks confused for a moment. "Nani?" she asks her hostess, to which Kerri looks at the girl sitting next to her.
"We really gotta work on this half English, half Japanese way you talk." she says poking her friend on the floor. Andrea laughed, but Sandra looked confused. "She talks half in Japanese and half English all the time," Andrea interpreted for her.
"Well, I just discovered it in the local videostore and went to the source with my debit card to buy the entire set," Dale said. "Nani?" Brandie said again.
"English." Kerri commanded as she smiled at the girl next to her. Brandie sighed.
"It means that it just came out recently in videostores," Sandra said, "And that Dale went to the TOKYOPOP Website and bought the entire set." Brandie still managed to look lost.
Then the sounds of "Here is gone" rang out just the music and no words. Brandie sighed and dug out the ringing cell phone. "Moshi Moshi." She paused. "Otou-san! I'll be home later this eve." She flashed a smile at Dale and company. "You should be proud Otou-san, I made some new friends today." She paused, laughing a little. "Ok Otou-san. Talk to you later. Sayonara." Hanging up the phone Brandie sighed. "Ok Have we decided on the anime we wanted to watch?"
Just as Dale was setting in the one DVD of Saint Tail, the doorbell rang and another person was standing there with a pair of covered pans in her hands. "I thought you would like these," the person- who was as strawberry-blonde as Usagi Tsukino was- said.
"Please," Dale replied, "Come inside." And it was then that Sandra recognized her and leaped up from her spot on the sofa to hug her. "I didn't even know you lived here, Jamie," she said. "One of the advantages of living alone in here," Jamie replied winking at Sandra.
Brandie, Kerri and Andrea turned and looked at the newcommer. "Hi" and "Konban wa." were the words that greeted Jamie as she stood there.
"This is Jamie Harris," Sandra said, "She's my cousin by way of marriage."
"Cool" came the chorused comment from the girls as they broke into giggling for doing the stereo sounding words. So Sandra introduced all of them and Dale was pleased to see a new friend. "You're welcome to stay with us, Jamie," Dale said. "I'd like that," she replied.
Kerri and Andrea teamed up and tickled the goth looking girl, making Brandie laugh loudly. Both girls were grinning like madwomen as they tickled their friend without mercy.
Sandra shook her head. "You three," she said. She was not sure to be appled or happy that they got along so well. "What can you say, cousin," Jamie said, "They're friends- you've got to count them in on that." "She's right, Sandra," Dale added.
Brandie panted as the other two quit tickling her breathless. Kerri and Andrea both smiled. "I wonder if she is ticklish?" Andrea said, looking to the hostess.
"So do I," Kerri agreed with Andrea. Two sets of eyes gazed at Dale- who realized she could be in trouble if the two decided to find out the answer to their question. Dale hoped they wouldn't - for she was dreadfully ticklish.
"Sometimes its easy to forget such different peple can be friends." Sandra said sighing. For the three in front of her, Dale and Jamie were as different as they could be. Well Brandie was at any rate. Both Kerri and Andrea looked perfectly normal.
Brandie took out her Utena DVDs. She placed them next to the Saint Tail DVDs. "So what are we going to watch first minna?" she asked. "You guys want to see Sailor Moon in a different way?" Dale asked.
Five sets of eyes riveted on Dale until Sandra caught on fast. "Of course!" she said, "The 3 VCDs she's got of Sera Myu!" "Oh I saw one of those while in Japan." Brandie said softly. "They are the Ultimate..." she searched for a word to use, then gave up and sighed.
Suddenly, Jamie, Kerri & Andrea were the ones who had their eyes on Dale. "What is Sera Myu?" Jamie asked. Brandie smiled and remained silent- she allowed Dale & Sandra to explain this to the others.
"They're the musicals based on the original Sailor Moon in the homecountry," Sandra told them, "Like the movies, Sera Myu is considered OVA except that it's performed on stage." "And the costumes are awesome," Dale added. "Yes they are the Ultimate in Japan," Brandie said softly.
Taking out a small book, she set it on the table where Dale noticed it and asked, "Is that a photo album, Brandie-chan?" "Yes it is. A photo and autograph album." She said softly. "I did not know anyone in the states that would like them." "Well, I liked the well plotted out stories," Dale said, "Like in the first, where the 5 Senshi battle Beryl and her minions using the Star Powers, as well as Eien Densetsu ."
Opening the book, she watched as the other girls gathered around to look at the pictures. There was the entire Sera Myu crew with a very happy looking Brandie standing there amoung them. "Ooh, that's got to be very good," Sandra said, "When was that taken?" "A year ago," Brandie said while smiling softly, "Dad and I go every year to Japan."
"So that was during Ankoku! Black Lady Tanjou!" Dale replied. "Yes it was," Brandie said, "They kept commenting how much I looked like Hotaru in civilian form." She gazed at the pictures as she flipped though the album.
"I was visiting some websites, looking at attending an Anime Convention here in the U.S.," Dale said, "And I came on one of the largest displays of Costumed Fans at them."
"Well they do that all the time in Japan," Brandie said slowly, "I just never really though of it." Kerri looked at them- two questions in her eyes and on the tip of her tongue.
"That's called Cosplay," Sandra said and she caught onto Dale's idea. "You're not thinking?" she asked, and Brandie laughed a little.
Kerri flipped the page and found Brandie in the Mistress Nine outfit. "Whoa nelly," she said, "They had you perform?" Brandie blushed a bit. "Their Hotaru came down with a bad cold," she remarked, "So I kinda got elected." She blushed remembering her father volnteering her to the group.
"Then you've had a great priviledge given to you," Dale said, "Imagine, being able to perform in a Sera Myu without auditioning." "Well its not like they have never meet me before," Brandie said softly again. "I always helped their Hotaru practice her lines."
But Sandra asked Dale, "Are you thinking the 6 of us can be an effective Cosplay Team?" "I really think so," Dale said. "Sounds like an adventure." Andrea said.
"Well I do know how to sew costumes." Brandie said softly.
Kerri nodded. "You would not be the only one sewing." Kerri pointed out to the smaller girl.
"But like Sandra said," Jamie said, "There's only 6 of us. How can there be 6 characters for a Cosplay?" "I might know of a few others," Brandie said softly, "I just don't know if they would want to."
So Dale went into the unused bedroom and brought out a large sketch pad- contained on it were many pics of Anime Characters in their clothes. One of which looked like just a bunch of lines on a sheet of paper. "Now who is that?" Jamie asked. "That's Seira Mimori," Dale replied. "But she looks like she's in..." Sandra said, "OF COURSE!"
Jamie looked at Sandra with a questioning expression- and she answered, "Seira's a character in SAINT TAIL- and most of her character is in the space she's in the habit of a Sister in Training."
"A habit?" Kerri asked. "The robes a sister- or nun- wears," Dale answered, "And for a Sister in Training, the robes are all white." Brandie nodded at Dale's explanation.
"Then Dale didn't have to apply color to the sketch of Seira's costume," Kerri said, "all she had to do was just sketch out the lines of the costume."
Sandra came onto one page that made her heart flutter... and she showed it to the others. "Man, would you look at that," Jamie said. The color sketch was of Saint Tail... all the way down to the hat, shoulder-length gloves and the SAINT ILLUSION STICK."
"Exactly," was Brandie's soft reply. Andrea and Jamie both smiled at that.
"One thing's for certain," Dale said to them, "The Sailor Cosmos sketches will have to be fitted for one of us one of these days." "I thinks Jamie would be the one." Brandie said softly and shyly once more.
"But we've got 2 who fit 2 different roles to a T," Dale added, and Kerri caught on. "Either me or Sandra could dress as Sailor Jupiter or as Saint Tail," she said.
"Ok enlighten me, Dale-chan." Brandie said softly as the other girls piled into the sewing room.
"Well," Dale said, "I was going to try to fit myself in as Saint Tail when I realized I would have to buy a wig for my head of hair." "And me and Sandra don't need a wig because our haircolors are natural," Kerri said.
Brandie smiled slightly. "Go on minna-san" "I get what Dale's saying," Sandra said, "She was going to take the sketches and her measurements and create a full Saint Tail outfit, complete with the hairpiece." Brandie raised an eyebrow.
"But she then decided that she could build one outfit for one who could truly be Saint Tail," Kerri said, "She would do the entire costume, then add the hat after finishing the Saint Illusion Stick."
"Then, me or Kerri can get our hair done up in her signature style," Sandra said, "and dress into the costume." Brandie nodded at the idea. "Either Sandra or Kerri could Hall Cosplay as Saint Tail!" Jamie said with excitement.
Andrea voiced the next question. "What other Animes do we all want to do?"
"Well, I know that Utena is a Shoujo Anime," Dale said.
"Who would play these roles Dale-chan?" Brandie asked watching Dale with a keen eye.
"Well, we would have to do just one anime during the regular Masquerade," Dale said, "And that could pose a challenge for us." "That is true." Brandie said softly. "Which Animes. Saint Tail and Utena?" "Well, why don't we try the final battle with Metallia and Serenity?" Jamie offered.
"That fits the 6 of us," Kerri said. "One of us would have to have a wig to play either Metallia or Mars."
"Next question." Brandie said softly. "Is who should play who."
"Well," Dale said, "Me and Jamie could play Serenity & Venus- question is, who gets who."
Brandie looked at both blondes. She rubbed her chin. then began to chant an old child's rhyme as her finger bounced between the two. "Enie meani miny mo." She chanted "This one get to play Venus don't ya know." Her eyes were closed as she did this much to the amusement of the group of girls she was with.
"Jamie looks a lot closer to being Serenity than you, Dale," Sandra said, "She is as close to being a strawberry blonde as you can get."
So the roles were set... but the big challenges awaited them in building the costumes and in rehearsal. TO BE CONTINUED IN THE NEXT STORY...
